2017/2018 Freshpak National Women’s League launched

The 2017/2018 National Women’s League was launched on Wednesday at the Coconut Grove Regency Hotel in Accra.

This year’s league campaign will see sixteen teams split into two groups of eight- the Northern Zone and the Southern Zone, with the top two from each group competing in a playoff to determine the winner.

The league will run from April 7 to July, with the playoffs set to take place in September.

Also new to the league will be the introduction of midweek games, which is geared towards speeding up the league campaign to enable its completion before the start of the Women’s AFCON in November.

FreshPak a subsidiary of Group Ndoum  are now the headline sponsors of the National Women’s league, in a deal worth Gh₵ 500,000 for two years.

Chief Executive Officer of the company, Nana Fori-Owusu expressed his delight at his company’s partnership with women’s football, and referenced the exploits of the National U-17 and U-20 teams as an indication of how fast the women’s game is growing.

“When Mr. Ndoum told me of his intentions to sponsor the league, I readily accepted because women’s football is growing in Ghana. The great work done by the Black Princesses and the Black Maidens has put Ghana Women’s football on the map and this is the reason we agreed to sponsor the league,” he said.

Champions Ampem Darkoa will kick off their campaign against Kumasi Sports Academy at the Ohene Ameyaw Technical Park on Sunday.
