Gold Coast 2018 Day 1: Boxer medal hopeful Abdul Omar crashes out

Black Bombers captain, Abdul Omar has crashed out of the ongoing Commonwealth Games at the round of 32 stage after losing to home favourite Harry Garside by unanimous decision.

Omar, who was Ghana’s flag bearer at the games, was dominated in all three rounds by his visibly confident opponent in the Men’s 60kg.

All five judges called the bout in favour of Garside who progresses to the round of 16 while Ghana’s Omar will have to pack his bags.

Black Bombers Coach, Ofori Asare, however believes that an accidental head-butt which resulted in a cut on Omar’s forehead affected his concentration and ultimately cost him.

“We had a plan and we felt we could’ve won the bout, but the accidental head collision in the first round cost us,” he said.

“The resultant cut disorganized him, as he was forced to protect the cut while fighting. I must commend him because he tried his best although it was always going to be difficult fighting against the home favourite.”

Omar won bronze in the Men’s 52kg in the last edition in Glasgow, and will be disappointed with his first round elimination this time around.

Ghana’s Abubakari Kwesi Quartey also crashed out after a unanimous decision loss to Mauritius’ Merven Clair Men’s 69kg Round of 32.
