Frederick Ghartey, Ghanaian boxing judge and referee who handled the bout between Braimah Kamoko aka Bukom Banku and Bastie Samir, has passed on after a period of ill health.

The death, which occurred on Monday, was confirmed by sources close to the referee and some officials of the Ghana Boxing Authority.

Ghartey was said to have been unwell for some time and thus, had been away from a lot of boxing events.

Ghartey officiated a lot of professional bouts in the country but perhaps, the most popular of them was the 2017 bout between rivals Banku and Samir which ended in a 7th round knockout victory for Samir.

He was the referee at the centre of the 2012 lightweight bout between Emmanuel “Game Boy” Tagoe and George “Red Tiger” Ashie which sparked the rivalry between the two boxers.

Ashie won the bout but the two boxers have been calling for a rematch ever since even thought it is yet to decided.

Apart from Ghana, Ghartey was put in charge of bouts in Nigeria, South Africa and Zambia.
