Rashid Sumaila joins Red Star Belgrade

Ghana defender Rashid Sumaila has signed a one-year loan deal with Serbian giants Red Star Belgrade.

The 25-year-old robust centre-back successfully passed a mandatory medical on Wednesday before putting pen to paper on the season-long deal which comes with an option to make his stay permanent.

He comes in as a replacement for compatriot Abraham Akwasi Frimpong who recently left the Reds for Hungary’s Ferencvaros.

“I am very happy to come to Red Star. I am here to help the team to achieve their goals, as well as the goals that the club wants.

“Red Star is a good club that will help me to make the toy progress. I know that the club has a great history, won the Champions League, and I know about last year’s good performance in the Europa League.

“By nature, I am a winner, I do not like to lose, and therefore I want to see the best results for Zvezda,” Sumaila said after signing his deal.

He has been on the books of Kuwaiti side Al Qadisiya over the past few years but spent the past season on loan at Al Garafa in Qatar.

Rashid Sumaila, who also previously played for Asante Kotoko and Ebusua Dwarfs, has an opportunity to taste Uefa Champions League football with his new club.
