La Liga round-up: Alaves miss chance to go joint-top

Alaves spurned the chance to join Barcelona and Real Madrid at the top of La Liga after going down 2-1 at struggling Levante on Sunday.

With Barca and Real both being held to home draws on Saturday night, Alaves could have joined the two Spanish superpowers on 14 points with victory.

And that looked set to be the case when Ruben Sobrino nodded home a left-wing cross to give them a fifth-minute lead.

But Levante, who came into the match with just four points from six games, drew level through Jason’s powerful 19th-minute header and claimed the points 17 minutes later when Antonio Tono drilled a low shot inside the near post.

In the late match, rock-bottom Leganes were unable to follow up their shock midweek win over Barca as they were beaten 1-0 by a last-gasp goal at Real Betis.

Substitute Loren broke Leganes hearts in the 89th minute when he got on the end of Cristian Tello’s pinpoint cross from the left to side-foot past Ivan Cuellar from six yards out.

Villarreal’s hopes of extending their unbeaten run to five matches going into Thursday’s Europa League trip to Spartak Moscow were ruined by Real Valladolid.

Leonardo Suarez’s fine 53rd-minute volley into the far corner of the net put Valladolid ahead and they held on for the 1-0 win as visiting goalkeeper Jordi Masip saved Gerard Moreno’s late penalty with his feet.

There were two spot-kicks in the match at Estadio El Alcoraz, but both were converted as second-bottom Huesca ended a four-match losing streak with a 1-1 draw against Girona.

Cristhian Stuani’s dinked spot-kick gave the visitors a 37th-minute, but Huesca levelled 18 minutes from time when Gonzalo Melero sent Yassine Bounou the wrong way from 12 yards.
