Richard Commey reveals plans to help upcoming boxers

IBF Lightweight champion, Richard Commey, may be enjoying his reign now as one of the kings of the division but he wants to see Ghana get more world champions in future and he wants to help in that regard.

He revealed on Monday at the Jubilee House that he would provide some boxing equipment to boxers in Accra to help their development in the sport.

He stated this when he presented his belt to the President, Nana Akufo Addo.

“I spoke to my manager and I decided that it was not going to be all about me. It is about producing more world champions from Ghana and so, every year, I plan to give some equipment to the young boxers because they are very good.

I will leave Ghana at the end of this month and come back around June with some more equipment. It will not be about Ga Mashie but it will for the whole country. As much as we can, we are trying to help nurture more world champions.”

President Akufo Addo, commended Commey for the gesture and for winning the world title in February this year after knocking out Isa Chaniev in  New York.

The President added that Commey would get a car and an amount of GHS 50,000.

Commey got the chance to fight for the crown after Mikey Garcia vacated it in favour of fighting Errol Spence Jr for the welterweight title.

Commey is expected to make a defence but the details are unknown. What is known is that Commey has plans to fight Vasyl Lomacheko to unify the IBF,  and the WBO and WBA belts currently held by Lomachenko.
