AFCON 2019: Bailly ruled out with knee injury

Ivorian injured in Premier League action for Manchester United against Chelsea

Ivory Coast center back Eric Bailly has been ruled out of this year’s AFCON in Egypt due to a knee injury.

The 25 year old injured himself in Manchester United’s 1-1 home draw against Chelsea in the Premier League, which was live on Citi 97.3 FM.

Scans taken earlier on Monday revealed the defender had considerable damage to his medial ligament.

“We can confirm that Manchester United defender Eric Bailly suffered a medial ligament injury on his right knee during Sunday’s Premier League match against Chelsea at Old Trafford.

The problem means that the Ivory Coast international will not play for the Reds again this season, missing the remaining top-flight matches against Huddersfield Town and Cardiff City.

Furthermore, Bailly is also now unable to play in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations tournament,” Manchester United said in a statement.

Bailly was part of the Ivory Coast side that won the 2015 AFCON, beating Ghana on penalties in the final.
