Asamoah Gyan rescinds retirement decision

Former Black Stars captain makes himself available for AFCON selection

Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has rescinded his decision to retire from the national team, only 48 hours after taking the decision.

Gyan took to his twitter handle to announce the quick u-turn which he said was influenced by a conversation by the President, Akufo-Addo, on Tuesday evening.

Gyan, 34, announced on Monday he was quitting the national team over head coach Kwasi Appiah’s decision to hand the captaincy of the Black Stars to another player, elevating him to the position of General captain.

President Akufo-Addo called a meeting with head coach Kwasi Appiah and other members of the technical team on Tuesday to get an understanding of the circumstances that led to Gyan’s retirement.

Gyan was then raised on the phone from his base in Turkey, and urged by the president to reconsider his decision.

The Kayserispor forwards says he is now available for selection for AFCON 2019 in Egypt.

It remains unclear if Gyan, 34, will be named in coach Kwasi Appiah’s provisional 30-man squad for their pre-tournament camp in Dubai.
