Tokyo 2020Q: Black Queens dispatch Gabon to set up Kenya clash

Ghana’s Black Queens, on Tuesday, eliminated Gabon 5-0 on aggregate to reach the third round of the Caf Women’s qualifiers to the 2020 Olympic Games.

On the back of a 3-0 first-leg advantage from Libreville, skipper Portia Boakye and midfielder Juliet Acheampong scored in either half for coach Mercy Tagoe’s side to win the second leg 2-0 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Boakye, who scored in the first leg, broke the deadlock on 16 minutes before Acheampong’s strike from distance went past the Gabon goalkeeper in the 70th minute.

Though the Queens could not produce an inspiring performance, they were good enough to go past Les Panthères.

Ghana advance to face Kenya who eliminated Malawi 5-3 on aggregate also in a second round qualifying tie.

The Black Queens will host the East Africans first in Accra on September 30 before travelling for the second leg in Nairobi scheduled for October 4.

The African qualifiers to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will run through to the fifth and final round later in January 2020.

Africa has 1.5 slots for the women’s football tournament next summer.
