Liverpool’s Robertson deletes Twitter account after abuse for conceding penalty against Napoli

Andy Robertson lets out a cry of anguish after giving away a penalty against Napoli with eight minutes of the game to go in Liverpool's Champions League clash on Tuesday night

Liverpool left-back, Andy Robertson, has deleted his Twitter account after receiving abuse following the Reds’ opening night loss at Napoli in the Champions League.

Robertson was at fault for Napoli’s opener, conceding the penalty that was put away by Dries Mertens.

This was a huge blow to the European Champions as they conceded the penalty eight minutes from time, having held the hosts to a goalless game until then.

A mistake from Virgil van Dijk saw Fernando Llorente double Napoli’s lead in stoppage time.

Although a number of Liverpool fans and manager, Jurgen Klopp believe that Napoli’s Jose Callejon dived, the referee’s decision to award the penalty was upheld after a VAR review.

Following the loss, some Liverpool fans took to Twitter to berate the defender for conceding the penalty.

The abuse was so intense and included the use of so many foul words that Robertson eventually deactivated his Twitter account.

Robertson had been a doubt before the game after suffering a minor injury in Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Newcastle but started on the left side of the Reds’ defence.
