AFCON 2021 Qualifiers: Andre Ayew expects “tough” tie against South Africa

Black Stars skipper, Andre Ayew, has warned his team mates to get ready for a difficult tie against South Africa on Thursday, November 14 in round one of the AFCON 2021 Qualifiers in Cape Coast.

Ghana and South Africa are locked in Group C together with Sudan and Sao Tome and Principe and the two established nations will hope to start the journey to the next AFCON in Cameroon on a positive footing.

The Black Stars started training on Monday and they will head to Cape Coast on Tuesday to continue their preparations before the match on Thursday.

Speaking after the first training session on Monday, Ayew said that the South Africans would pose a huge challenge to the Stars especially as the Ghanaian team is meeting for the first time since the 2019 AFCON tournament in Egypt where they exited at the Round of 16 stage.

“We are ready for the match against South Africa. It is true that we did not meet in the last two international breaks and so, it will be challenging for us but that is no excuse.

Our job is to make sure that we get the three points and start the qualifiers well.

The group we are in is a tough group with the likes of Sudan and South Africa. We have met the Bafana Bafana a lot of times and so, we have to make sure we deal with their qualities while bringing ours to bear.”

After the match against South Africa, Ghana will travel to face Sao Tome and Principe on November 17 in round 2 with the rest of the qualifiers resuming in 2020 between August and November.
