Ex-Black Stars player, Charles Kwabla Akonnor has been appointed the new head coach of the men’s senior national team.

He replaces Kwesi Appiah whose contract with the national team expired in December 2019.

C. K. Akonnor has signed a two-year contract to take charge of the Black Stars of Ghana until 2022.

He was a member of Kwesi Appiah’s technical team that recorded wins over South Africa and Sao Tome and Principe in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

This appointment follows the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) decision to dissolve all the technical teams of the various levels of football.

The 45-year-old will be deputized by David Duncan.

Akonnor has vast experience in the field of coaching following stints with Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Accra Hearts of Oak, Dreams Football Club, Ashanti Gold Soccer Club, and Sekondi Eleven Wise.

The GFA has also named the rest Technical Team of the Black Stars as follows:

Background

Charles Kwabla Akonnor is an ex-Black Stars captain and featured for the country 41 times and scored 12 goals in the process.

His most recent appointment as head coach was Kumasi Asante Kotoko, guiding the team to win the GFA Normalization Committee Special Competition in 2019.
