Olivier Giroud set to sign new deal to stay at Chelsea

French striker Olivier Giroud is set to sign a new one-year contract extension with Chelsea.

The new deal for the World Cup winner comes despite being close to a departure from the club in January.

Giroud signed for Chelsea at the start of 2018 from Arsenal until summer 2019 before agreeing a new one-year deal.

Having found playing time difficult to come by at the Stamford Bride club before the winter transfer window, Giroud sought a way out of the blub.

With Chelsea keen to offload him, a deal to sell Giroud fell through once the club failed to sign a replacement.

However once the Blues’ first-choice striker Tammy Abraham suffered an injury, Giroud returned to the first-team and impressed, helping the club remain in the top four until the season was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It’s unclear what this means for Chelsea’s other striker Michy Batshuayi who has endured an uncertain time at the club since signing, or any potential plans to sign a new striker.
