AWCON 2020: It hurts to see CAF cancel competition – Linda Eshun

Black Queens Defender, Linda Eshun, says it hurts to see CAF cancel the 2020 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations while other CAF competitions have merely been rescheduled.

The Africa Women’s Championship was set to come off in November and December of this year but CAF had yet to find a host after Congo pulled out of hosting the competition in 2019.

CAF announced on Tuesday that the 8-team competition will not come off this year, the first time an edition of the competition has been cancelled in over 20 years.

Eshun, who plays for the National Women’s League side, Sekondi Hasaacas, says the cancellation of the competition has disrupted the players’ plans of winning a trophy for Ghana.

“It’s painful, it hurts that there is not going to be a women’s AFCON this year due to the Coronavirus, so it is going to come on probably in 2022,” Eshun said in an interview with Citi Sports’ Fentuo Tahiru Fentuo.

It’s painful because we were aiming to partake in the competition this year and win the trophy for Ghana but our plans have been changed.” She concluded.

This means Ghana’s Black Queens will now have to wait till 2022 to make an attempt to bring the trophy home, after being eliminated at the group stage on home soil in 2018.
