Company pays fan who bet Jesse Lingard would not score or assist for entire season, despite 98th-minute goal

A fan was seconds away from a big-money payout after betting that Manchester United player, Jesse Lingard, would finish the entire 2019/20 Premier League season without a goal or assist.

With two matches of the season left, one Twitter user, Antony Johnson, posted a £3.30 bet he had placed on the player, who has often been derided for his unimpressive stats, not finding the net or providing an assist the whole campaign.

Johnson was set to get a return of £135.30 with Lingard having not scored or assisted all season, heading into their final game against Leicester.

However, unfortunately for him, Jesse Lingard, who only came on in the second half, managed to find a 98th-minute goal after an error by Leicester keeper, Kasper Schmeichel.

While anyone would have been devastated, Johnson took it in good faith, joking that he should have never doubted “the king.”

The betting company Paddy Power, however, paid out the bet in full to Johnson.

Johnson tweeted that he couldn’t accept it and instead donated the entire amount to the Black Lives Matter movement.

Shoutout to @paddypower for paying out anyway but I can’t accept this. If you’ve enjoyed this tweet, consider making a donation to @ukblm,” he tweeted.
