Football, contact sports still banned – Nana Akufo-Addo

President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says the ban on football and contact sports still holds for the foreseeable future due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Football in the country has been suspended since March due to the pandemic.

The uncertainty surrounding the resumption of football led the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to annul the 2019/2020 season.

As part of measures being put in place to bring the sport back, the GFA has already presented an elaborate plan to clubs detailing a road map to bringing football back in the country under strict COVID-19 protocols.

In the President’s 16th address to Ghanaians, he however assured that measures are being taken to ensure football returns under safe conditions.

“In the next couple of weeks, a decision will be taken on the resumption of contact sports including football, taking into consideration the imminent participation of our national teams in international competitions.

“As a known lover of football, I know how devastating this absence has been and it is my hope that very soon, we will all have the pleasure of watching the beautiful game again.

“Until then, non-contact are the only sports permitted to take place.”
