Ghana thump Qatar 5-1: Akonnor records first win as head coach

Ghana’s Black Stars produced an improved performance to beat Qatar 5 – 1 in their second international friendly match under head coach C.K Akonnor.

Akonnor’s charges bounced back from a disappointing 3 – 0 loss to Mali to record the comfortable victory over the Asian champions at the Titanic Stadium in Antalya, Turkey.

Tarique Fosu grabbed his first international goal in the 22nd-minute as he capitalized on a loose ball following an impressive show of strength and grit by Jordan Ayew.

A sleeping Ghana defense enabled Ali Almoez to grab an equalizer before half-time for Qatar.

The Black Stars maintained control of the game for long spells as Thomas Partey and Andre Ayew came close to giving Ghana the advantage.

The Swansea playmaker grabbed his first goal of the game as he collected a pass from Thomas Partey, before placing the ball beyond the reach of goalkeeper, Al Sheeb.

Samuel Owusu was rewarded for his hard work as he latched on to a ball over the top from Partey and slotted home to extend the Black Stars’ lead.

With 10 minutes remaining, Black Stars captain Andre Ayew completed his brace before Caleb Ekuban buried the game with Ghana’s fifth of the night.

The Black Stars now turn their attention to the African Cup of Nations Qualifiers as they face Sudan in a double-header in November.
