“Mali weren’t extraordinary; we just lacked organization” – Akonnor on Mali defeat

Head coach of the Ghana national football team, CK Akonnor, has attributed his team’s defeat to Mali on Friday to a lack of team organization, rather than the brilliance of the opponents.

Akonnor’s first game in charge of the Black Stars ended in a humiliating 3-0 hammering at the hands of West African opposition Mali in an international friendly played in Turkey on Friday.

In an interview with Adom FM after the game, the former Asante Kotoko and Ashantigold trainer blamed the defeat on too many new faces in the team which he said caused some disorganization.

“The players didn’t know themselves because most were debutantes. It’s also the first time they’re playing together, we trained for only two days and there was a lack of understanding as well,” he said.

“I won’t blame the players, but the key thing was that the team was not organised. Mali didn’t play anything extraordinary but they were organized; that handed them the victory.”

Ghana will next play Qatar on Monday to wrap up October’s round of international friendlies with Afcon 2021 qualifiers to come in November.
