“A true friend of sport” – International Olympic Committee mourns Rawlings

The International Olympics Committee (IOC) has written to the Ghana Olympics Committee to mourn with Ghanaians after the passing of the former president Jerry John Rawlings.

Rawlings died in the early hours of Thursday, November 14, 2020.

In a letter copied the Ghana Olympic Committee boss, Ben Nunoo Mensah, IOC president, Thomas Bach described Rawlings as a “true friend of sport during a  time when Ghanaian athletes were performing at the highest level at the Olympic Games”.

It is with great sadness that I learned of the death of His Excellency Jerry John Rawlings.

Please accept my sincere condolences to you, the Ghana Olympic Committee and the people of Ghana.

I am grateful for the fact that President Rawlings was a true friend of sport during a  time when Ghanaian athletes were performing at the highest level at the Olympic
Games.

With deepest sympathy.

Rawlings was President when Ghana became the first African country to win an Olympic medal in football, when the Black Meteors picked up bronze at the 1992 games in Barcelona.
