GPL: Johnson Smith justifies why referees must protect ‘soft’ Fabio Gama

Interim head coach of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Johnson Smith, has called on Ghanaian referees to offer more protection for Brazilian midfielder Fabio Gama.

Gama has become a mainstay in the Asante Kotoko starting XI following his impressive debut performance against Liberty Professionals in which he set up the second of Kwame Opoku’s 2 goals in the 2-0 victory.

Since then however, the 28 year old has failed to register an assist in subsequent games against WAFA and Ebusua Dwarfs.

But Smith believes Gama is unfairly targeted for consistent fouling by opponents and wants referees to offer more protection for his creative midfielder.

“Opponents have been fouling Fabio Gama and he has suffered too much. I will plead with Ghanaian referees to protect him. He is yet to get used to the Ghanaian style of football. He is not strong enough,” he concluded.

Kotoko are second on the league log, one point behind leaders Karela United and face Aduana Stars on Sunday.
