GPL: Elmina Sharks hand Kotoko first away defeat of the season

Elmina Sharks brought an end to their six game winless run in the Ghana Premier League by handing a first away defeat to Asante Kotoko at the Nduom Sports Stadium on Friday night.

Mustapha Alhaji’s 55th minute strike was the difference between the two sides on a soggy pitch in Elmina.

This is Coach Odartey Lamptey’s first win in his first game in charge at the club.

The ex-Ghana international was appointed interim head coach for Elmina Sharks following the resignation of Yaw Acheampong.

The best chance in the game fell to Kotoko’s Kwame Opoku in the first-half.  The striker pounced on a loose ball, rounded the goalkeeper, but his shot was cleared off the line by a Sharks defender.

Kotoko pushed hard for an equaliser but Sharks were resolute in defense and held on to their lead to grab all three points.

The result leaves Kotoko in the sixth position, four points behind leaders Karela United with two outstanding games.

Elmina Sharks on the other hand climb up to 13th place with 20 points.
