What a win, draw or loss against South Africa would mean for Ghana’s AFCON hopes

Following what seemed like a routine path to the African Cup of Nations tournament after three wins from three, the Black Stars now face a perilous end to the qualifying campaign.

While qualification remains squarely in their hands, the loss last time out in Sudan has made head coach, C.K Akonnor’s task a little tougher than he would have wanted.

The Stars and South Africa are tied at the top of Group C (along with Sudan who have played a game more) on nine points and face each other later today at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.

The Contenders

Any two from Ghana, South Africa and Sudan can qualify for the AFCON. The three teams have nine points (although Sudan have played a game more). Sao Tome and Principe have no chance to qualify as they currently have 0 points.

The Rules

CAF’s rules for the AFCON qualifiers state that teams are ranked according to points (3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss). If tied on points, tiebreakers are applied in the following order:
