2020 Olympic Games: Egypt drawn in group of death with Argentina & Spain

The African teams who have qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic football tournament have been handed their opponents for the preliminary round.

The draw which was conducted on Wednesday morning at Fifa’s headquarters in Zurich, was led by Sarai Bareman, Fifa chief women’s football officer and Fifa’s director of tournaments Jaime Yarza.

Egypt have been drawn in group C alongside 1992 gold medalists Spain, Australia and 2004, 2008 winners Argentina.

The Pharaohs begin their campaign against Spain on July 22 at the Sapporo Dome, before taking on Australia three days later at the same venue.

Cote d’Ivoire are also in a tough zone as they have been put in Group D with reigning Champions Brazil, Germany and Saudi Arabia.

South Africa who are in Group A have been drawn with hosts Japan, Mexico and France.

Nigeria remain the only African football team to win a gold medal at the Olympics after they defeated Argentina in the final of the 1996 games.
