Absence of key players not an excuse – Akonnor

Head Coach of Ghana’s Black Stars, CK Akonnor has refused to blame his side’s defeat against South Africa in their FIFA World Cup qualifier on the absence of some key players due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Ghana missed the services of some key players including Jordan Ayew, Daniel Amartey and Kamaldeen Suleman due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Akonnor admits their absence was felt and believes authorities could’ve done better in handling the situation, although he opted not to pinpoint that as the reason his team were beaten.

“Covid-19 affects everybody. We were aware of the situation and we had a plan B,” he said.

“FIFA or CAF should’ve taken charge of the situation bcos some Euro teams are playing and we are deprived of this advantage and it’s not good. But that is not an excuse,” Akonnor added.

The defeat sends Ghana into second place behind South Africa with only the group winner set to advance into the playoff round.

Ghana will take on Zimbabwe in a double header in October’s round of qualifiers.
