Coach Sappor Decries the state of boxing gyms in the country.

A Boxing trainer, Rovers Sappor has appealed to the National Sports Authority to make a case to government to consider equipping gyms noted for grooming talents into the national amateur team, the Black Bombers or have nurtured boxers to be potential world beaters.

Rovers, a member of the coaching staff of Dodzi Kermah, a former IBF Africa super welterweight champion believes such gesture would encourage and propel coaches in the various gyms to give their best in nurturing fighters, knowing they would be beneficiaries.

“I think the state should consider rewarding gyms that are able to train boxers to get into the national team. That I believe will motivate the trainers to give their all in nurturing boxing talents.”

According to Rovers Sappor, most of the gyms dotted across the James Town and Bukom areas are makeshift arenas lacking state of the art equipment to hone the talents of young boxers.

“In most of the gyms, basic training equipment such as gloves, mitts, speed balls, head gears, pads, among others are either improvised, deteriorated or not existing.
It is not a pleasant thing at all but no one cares despite the fact that boxing continue to achieve a lot for the country.”
