‘If I’m fit, why not?’ – Asamoah Gyan on playing for Ghana at 2022 World Cup

Asamoah Gyan says he will consider returning to the Black Stars if he is called up to the squad for the 2022 World Cup only if he is fit.

Gyan is Ghana and Africa’s leading goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history with six goals.

The forward has also found the net in every World Cup Ghana has played in, having scored once in 2006, three times in 2010 and twice in 2014.

Gyan, however, has not played for the Black Stars since he came off the bench in Ghana’s Round of 16 match against Tunisia at AFCON 2019.

He has also not played active football for about a year since he left Ghana Premier League club, Legon Cities.

Gyan reiterated that he has not retired from the national team and was still available for selection but admitted that he was not in the right shape at the moment.

He added that his focus at the moment was to get fit for his own health but he might consider a call-up if he feels in good physical condition ahead of the tournament.

“If I’m fit why not. My plan is not to play for the national team, I want to be fit. I’m still available to play for the national team,” he told Asaase Radio.

“The most important thing is my health. If you call me and I’m not fit, how can I play?”
