AFCON 2023Q: Wakaso, Baba Rahman named in 33-man squad for Madagascar and CAR games

Mubarak Wakaso and Abdul Baba Rahman have been named in coach Otto Addo’s 33-man squad to face Madagascar and the Central African Republic in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The duo missed the 2022 World Cup play-off game against Nigeria through injury.

Rennes youngster Kamaldeen Sulemana also makes a return to the squad for the first time since January’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Cameroon following recovery from a back injury.

Captain, Andre Ayew, who also missed the World Cup play-off games through suspension, has also been named. But his deputy and Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey is out with an injury.

There’s also no place for Strasbourg defender Alexander Djiku, who has asked to be excused from the squad for personal reasons.

Clemont Foot defender, Alidu Seidu, has been called up as his replacement.

Ghana face Madagascar at the Cape Coast Stadium on June 1 before flying to play the Central African Republic on June 5.

The Black Stars will then make the long trip to Japan to participate in a 4-nation tournament featuring the host, Tunisia and Chile.

Debutants

Bristol City striker, Antoine Semenyo will finally get a chance to represent Ghana after being handed his debut call up. He was forced to pull out of the World Cup play-off game with injury.

SV Darmstadt 98 forward Braydon Manu will have another chance to make his debut. He was first called up by former coach CK Akonnor in September 2021 but was not handed his debut.

Bechem United’s Augustine Okrah and Hearts of Oak’s Afriyie Barnieh have also been named.
