GPL: Kotoko to be crowned in final home fixture – GFA

Asante Kotoko will be crowned champions of the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League (GPL) in their final home game of the season, the GFA has officially announced.

The Porcupine Warriors cleared all doubts about reclaiming the title for the first time since 2014 on Thursday after drawing 1-1 away to AshantiGold in an outstanding match-day 29 fixture.

The stalemate in Obuasi earned Kotoko an unassailable 10-point advantage over Bechem United and Medeama SC who tie just below them with 50 points in the league standings with three games to spare.

Asante Kotoko thus extend their reign as the most successful side in the domestic top-flight competition with a 25th triumph.

Coach Prosper Narteh Ogum’s men have games against Great Olympics in Accra next Sunday, the final home bow against bottom side Elmina Sharks and a visit to Accra Lions to wrap the campaign.

The league organizers and their presentation team will be at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium with the coveted trophy and medals to crown Kotoko after the Sharks game.

“The Ghana Football Association will be crowning Asante Kotoko SC as champions of the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League season on Sunday, June 12, 2022, when they host Elmina Sharks FC on Matchday 33.

“The match will kick off at 6 pm at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi,” read a statement on the GFA website.

It added: “Officials of the GFA will be at the Baba Yara Stadium to present the GPL trophy and medals to the players and technical staff of the club.

“The club will also be presented with the prize money for winning the league.”

Asante Kotoko currently have 60 points after 31 matches. It remains to be known if they will surpass the 62 tallied by dethroned champions Hearts of Oak last season.
