2022 CWG: I had malaria and a boil in my armpit – Commey on missing final

Ghanaian boxer, Joseph Commey, has explained that he was dealing with malaria and boils under his armpit, causing him to miss his final bout in the just ended 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Commey was scheduled to fight Northern Ireland’s Jude Gallagher in the final of the featherweight division, but was declared medically unfit to compete.

The 19-year old had to settle for silver as Gallagher was declared winner of the match.

“I was going to the finals when I was struck with the illness. I had both malaria and a boil under my armpit. After the checkup I was told by the doctor that I couldn’t fight though I insisted on fighting,” Commey told the press.

”Anything could have happened if I had fought, so we give glory to God in all things. Maybe next time I might win gold or maybe the Olympics games I might win gold,” he added.

Commey recorded two consecutive victories, before beating New Zealand’s Alex Maduka and India’s Muhammad Husammudin in the quarterfinals semi-finals respectively.

Ghana concluded the Birmingham games with five medals, three from boxing and two from track and field.
