Ghanaians in the UCL: Group stage update

We are halfway through the Champions League Group Stage and Ghanaian players have looked good for their teams. Sporting CP and Club Brugge are soaring whilst Ajax have struggled to compete. Regardless for the most part the Ghanaians in the competition have looked very good individually.

Abdul Fatawu Issahaku – Sporting Clube de Portugal

Talented winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku has been little more than a footnote in his side’s UCL adventures this season. He has made the matchday squad for all three games but has yet to make a single appearance. He will hope the second half of the group stage brings him more action. Sporting have not needed him however as they have managed 6 points from their games and are leading their group at the halfway point.

Mohammed Kudus – AFC Ajax

Kudus has flourished in his new role leading the Ajax attack. The Ghanaian midfielder despite being played out of position has as many goals as Kylian Mbappe and is the joint 3rd highest scorer in the UCL with 3 goals. Despite his best efforts Ajax have managed only 1 win and have been on the receiving end of a 6-1 battering at the hand of group leaders Napoli. Progress to the next round looks to be an uphill task as things stand.

Kamal Sowah – Club Brugge

Brugge have been the surprise package of this season’s competition. They have stormed to the top of their group and Sowah has been key to this. With 2 goals he is his team’s top scorer and only 9 players have more goals in the competition. The Ghanaian winger is yet to score in the league but his goals in the European competition have been a nice surprise for a player who struggled for game time last season. His form might give Otto Addo something to think about as the World Cup looms.

Denis Odoi – Club Brugge

Veteran defender Odoi is having a Champions League debut season to remember. He has been ever-present in the competition’s best defence as Brugge have managed to keep 3 clean sheets so far in the competition. Many expected Brugge to struggle but they have managed to maintain a perfect start, making them very likely to proceed to the next round of the competition
