Ashgold vs GFA: Court adjourns contempt case to October 25

The High Court has adjourned the contempt case brought against the Ghana Football Association (GFA) by Ashantigold Football Club to Tuesday, October 25, 2022.

The case was adjourned following a directive by the Jugde, Justice Nicholas Agbodakpi, for all members of the GFA Executive Council to respond individually to the contempt application instead of the collective response they filed.

Ashgold cited the Executive Council for contempt claiming the body ignored an interlocutory injunction placed on 2022/2023 Betpawa Premier League which kicked off on September 10, 2022.

The Miners are seeking imprisonment for the GFA Executive Council Members for what they describe as disregard for the dignity, respect, and authority of the court.

Ashantigold’s Lawyer, Edward Sam Crabbe told Citi Sports:

“The judge realized that the document filed for and on behalf of all the respondents [GFA] particularly the first to the thirteen was improper. The court was of the opinion that this is a quasi-criminal matter. So each person must file his own document to respond to the charges.”

“The court has adjourned to 25th of October to enable each and every one of them, there are fourteen of them to respond to the charges levelled against them individually and not collectively.”

“The fifth respondent, Dr. Randy Abbey has been able to file his response in simple terms individually. But the court realized that he raised issues with the service of the interlocutory injunction order on him. The court was of the opinion that on the 25th, the contempt application will not be heard. But rather, he will conduct a mini-trial to ascertain whether or not the order for an interlocutory injunction which forms the basis of the contempt application was actually served the GFA through Dr. Randy Abbey”.

Both parties are expected to return to court on Thursday, October 20, 2022, to hear a leave application from Ashantigold to file a supplementary affidavit in their Interlocutory injunction case against the GFA.
