‘I was always going to say yes’ – Chris Hughton on special connection with Ghana

In an interview with British newspaper, the Dailymail, Black Stars technical advisor, Chris Hughton opened up on his “special connection” with Ghana.

Hughton was appointed by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) in February this year as technical advisor of the men’s national team.

His role was confirmed after weeks of speculation that he would take over as head coach; that position went to Otto Addo instead.

But Hughton was chomping at the bit to deepen his connection with a country he has a very personal relationship with.

Chris’ father, Willie Hughton was a Ghanaian who left for East London back in the 1950s, and the former Newcastle and Brighton manager says his heritage played a huge role in his decision to accept the position when it was offered.

“There’s no doubt that played a part,” he said in the interview.

“I do feel a strong connection to the country. So, when they asked if I was prepared to help, using my experience and knowledge, the answer was always going to be yes.”

Hughton will be a key member of Ghana’s technical team for the 2022 World Cup having aided Otto Addo’s side to reach the tournament in the first place.

His vast experience in management is in stark contrast to the other three main members of the technical team, including head coach, Otto Addo who is taking a top managerial position for the first time.

However, Hughton retains trust in the team and believes the Black Stars will be well-prepared for the tournament.

“One thing I’m confident of is the work Otto and the technical staff have put in. This team will be very well prepared and the players will give everything,” he said.

“We will have to play well and we’ll need a bit of luck. But we’ve seen in past tournaments that anything is possible for a country like ours.”

Ghana will face Portugal in their first game on November 24, before taking on South Korea four days later.

The Black Stars’ final group game is against Uruguay on December 2.
