The University of Ghana (UG) and Braves of Customs have qualified to the finals of the Accra Basketball League (ABL) Playoffs in the Men’s Division II and Women’s Division respectively.
In the Men’s Division I, Braves of Customs have taken 1-0 lead in the best of three game series in the finals. All three games were played at the Prisons Court in Cantonments.
Women’s Division
Braves have qualified to the Women’s Final and will play Reformers of Prisons next after eliminating defending league champions Ghana Police Service (2-1) in the best of three game series.
Afia Agyemang and Gloria Gyampoh of Braves scored early on in the third quarter. A Georgina Ntow layup and Zainab Mohammed’s three pointer trimmed Police’s deficit to six points (27-33) to end the quarter.
Braves’ Faiza Inusah, Stephanie Annan and Rahinatu Dramani scored late on in the fourth quarter to clinch the 53-42 win for Braves.
Men’s Division II
UG battled hard to take a 2-1 series lead and progress to the finals where the tertiary side is set to take on Spintex Knights. UG qualified at the expense of defending champions TUSK Foundation.
Aziz Mutawakil dunked on a fast break and Leslie Alhassan’s jumper gave Tusk a 22-18 first lead but TUSK couldn’t hold on to its lead as back-to back three pointers from Samuel Owusu put UG up 41-36 to close the first half.
UG’s front court duo of Kuuku Baidoo and Nigel Quaynor flexed their size to score inside the paint as UG won 73-52 to clinch the series.
Men’s Division I
Reigning champions Reformers of Prisons made a bright start in Game One of the Finals but struggled to create consistent offense in the second half as Braves won 76-61.
Zakari Alhassan and Daniel Aryee scored as Braves led 34-25 at half time and Braves veteran trio of Dodzi, Nii Kwatey and Patrick Gamerli delivered timely baskets to stretch Customs lead.
On the other hand, reigning ABL MVP James Amotoe of Reformers was kept largely quiet in the game.
