Premier League, La Liga and Serie A preview

Previews for matchdays from 28-31 October 2022

SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv can look forward to extended action from the Premier League, La Liga  and Serie A, with matches scheduled to be played from Friday 28 to Monday 31 October 2022.

DStv and GOtv is the only true home of football in Africa, offering a range and depth of action that no other rival can match – it’s literally ‘Unbeatable Football’! If you’re going to spend your money on something, it may as well be on the best football in the world.

The pick of Premier League matches for this round is the meeting of Liverpool and Leeds United at Anfield on Saturday evening. Recent meetings of these two teams have produced plenty of goals (18 in four Premier League matches since Leeds returned to the top fight in 2020) and they will hopefully continue that trend in this clash.

The Whites’ defender Pascal Struijk has called on his side to be more clinical and determined in their performances: “We need to get better and hold onto results or make the difference even bigger, so that if teams pull a goal back, we are still winning.”

Saturday opens with Leicester City welcoming Manchester City to the King Power Stadium in an early-afternoon clash, with Foxes attacker Kelechi Iheanacho hoping to sting his former club, while the mid-afternoon kick-offs are headlined by Chelsea manager Graham Potter heading back to Brighton & Hove Albion.

“I had a fantastic spell with Brighton and I cannot speak highly enough of the club, the players, administrators and especially the supporters,” said Potter. “But we go there with the ambition of winning a football match, and emotions need to be put aside as far as possible.”

Saturday also features Fulham hosting Everton and Bournemouth looking to upset Tottenham Hotspur at home, while Sunday’s action is headlined by West Ham United visiting Manchester United, and preceded by Arsenal hosting Nottingham Forest at the Emirates Stadium, where the atmosphere has never been better under the leadership of manager Mikel Arteta.

“For me, bringing the club together is much more powerful,” said the Spaniard. “We have a club that was in a difficult state, with a lot of cracks with a lot of division. When people who have been here for 30 years who are emotionally attached to the club come to me and say: Listen, I’ve never seen this before. I never felt that unity across the club. I never felt that unity. With our supporters.”

SuperSport is the only place where you can get English commentary on the legendary La Liga, where the headline fixture sees Valencia welcome Barcelona to Estadio de Mestalla. The Blaugrana have won the last three league meetings of these teams, and will aim to complete a quartet in order to keep up their push for the title, but Los Che manager Gennaro Gattuso is hoping for an upset.

“We know the quality of Barcelona’s team and the history they have,” said the Italian. “But we cannot be afraid of past results. All that matters is the game in front of us and the chance to write our own story.”

Another potential thriller in Spain’s top fight this round sees Real Sociedad and Real Betis meet at the Reale Arena in San Sebastian. Though neither Los Txuri-Urdin nor Los Verdiblancos look like genuine title contenders this season, their meeting could be key in deciding qualification for either the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League.

“Both teams are in a good moment,” said Betis manager Manuel Pellegrini. “It will be a difficult match, decided by small details. We will be ready for the challenge and embrace the need to sometimes suffer against a very good team.”

La Liga champions Real Madrid will back themselves to get all three points when they welcome Girona to Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, while Atletico Madrid have a tricky match away to Cadiz at Estadio Nuevo Mirandilla – with manager Diego Simeone hoping Angel Correa can make the difference in the match.

“Angel makes us happy, because he is all heart,” said Simeone. “On many occasions he has not started matches, but in all of these years at the club he has always played, by merit, for making an impact, for getting angry, for showing it… When he is angry off the pitch, he shows it on the pitch and this gives him more of a chance to play in a team that is all passion, demands, we have our demands very high.”

The top clash from Serie A in this round is the meeting of Torino and AC Milan in Turin on Sunday night. Il Toro do not harbour the same lofty ambitions as the Rossoneri, but they will nonetheless hope to claim an upset win at Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino to close out the weekend

“We will play at home and have the support of our crowd, out people,” said Torino midfielder Sasa Lukic. “They can expect that we will play with pride and determination. Our opponents have quality all over the pitch, but we have the belief that we can match them on the day.”

The round opens on Saturday afternoon with Napoli looking to continue their status as one of Europe’s must-watch teams when they welcome Sassuolo to Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, while the evening features heavyweights Juventus and Internazionale taking on Lecce (away) and Sampdoria (home) respectively.

“We must find our best form and finish strongly in these last games before the World Cup,” said Inter midfielder Marcelo Brozovic. “Many players are excited by the upcoming tournament, but we must first focus on the task at hand for our club.”

A busy Sunday opens with Atalanta visiting Empoli, before Cremonese and Spezia play host to Udinese and Fiorentina respectively in simultaneous mid-afternoon fixtures, followed by Lazio welcoming Salernitana to Stadio Olimpico.

Monday brings the round to a close with Monza tackling Bologna in the late game, preceded by Roma taking on hosts Verona at Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi.  “We have to recover and work harder,” said Roma defender Chris Smalling, who has become a scorer of vital goals for the Giallorossi. “We know we can play better and the goals will come more frequently.”
