World Cup: Otto Addo names two local players in final squad

Black Stars head coach, Otto Addo, has named two Ghana-based players in his squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The two in question are Ibrahim Danlad of Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Daniel Afriyie Barnieh of Accra Hearts of Oak.

The two players have been in and out of the Black Stars squad.

Danlad seemed to be the 5th choice keeper heading into the tournament but late injuries to Richard Ofori and Jojo Wollacott meant that the goalkeeping hierarchy experienced some late changes and Danlad was one of the main beneficiaries.

Barnieh has been ever-present in most of Otto Addo’s squads and, coupled with his great form for the Black Galaxies and Black Meteors, his inclusion was always very likely.

This is quite a low number of Ghana Premier League players to be taken to the World Cup. Despite an increase from 1 in 2014, 2006 and 2010 had more Ghana Premier League representation with 4 and 3 respectively.

Ghana kick off their World Cup campaign against Portugal on November 24th at 4 pm GMT.
