Ghanaian defender Harrison Afful has signed a two year contract with Major League Soccer (MLS) side Charlotte FC.

The 36 year old full back’s new deal runs through the 2023 season with a team option for the 2024 season. Afful competed in Charlotte FC’s debut campaign in the MLS last season.

Former Kumasi Asante Kotoko Sporting Club player, Afful, played 21 league games last season and his new deal comes with a package that gives Afful the chance to work in the team’s scouting department as a professional development role.

“Harry played an important role in our 2022 season, and we’re excited to have him back in our locker room for the upcoming campaign. His versatility and leadership are incredibly valuable, and we’re looking forward to seeing him on the pitch once again in 2023,” Charlotte FC Sporting Director Zoran Krneta said.

Afful is preparing to compete in his ninth MLS season after spending seven seasons with Columbus Crew where he won the 2020 MLS Cup.

Charlotte FC plays its opening game of the new MLS season on February 23 against New England Revolution.
