Herbert Mensah enters race for Rugby Africa Presidency

Ghana rugby president Herbert Mensah has entered the race for the presidency of Rugby Africa.

The African rugby body, Rugby Africa, will be electing a new president at the Annual General Meeting set to be held in Cape Town on 18 March 2023.

Mr. Herbert Mensah was nominated for the position by the Nigerian Rugby Football Federation.

The president, when elected, will serve in office for a period of four years, which begins after the winner is announced on the 18th of March.

It is important to note that this is the first time that the presidency of Africa Rugby will be contested.

Mr. Mensah is of the view that there are inequalities in the funding from the global rugby body, World Rugby which he addressed in an interview with Al Jazeera

“We are not getting up there and saying, give us 39 votes or 34 votes, the number of countries that are registered playing rugby within Africa but we need to get greater equities. So you now need to monetize it” he said

“You now need to bring people on board who are commercially linked and minded. We need to put programs on board, we need to get back to governments, we need to get back to global structures that will help with training, kit supply, balls, and sponsorship to have leagues competitions,” he added

Herbert Mensah served as the Greater Accra Rugby Association (GARA) in 2014 before becoming Ghana Rugby president.
