Andre Ayew did not travel with the Black Stars because he was benched – Charles Taylor

Former Ghana International Charles Asampong Taylor has alleged that Black stars skipper Andre Ayew did not travel with the squad to Angola for the return leg of Ghana’s African cup of Nations qualifier because he was benched in the first leg in Kumasi.

Ghana played the Palancas Nergras of Angola on the 23rd of March 2023 in Kumasi scrapping a 1-0 result through a late Antoine Semenyo goal.

Ghana skipper Andre Ayew name was noticeably missing from both the starting eleven and matchday team sheets raising concerns about his fitness but after the game head coach Chris Hughton stated emphatically that leaving Andre out of the squad was his decision.

The black stars then travelled to Luanda to face the Angolans on the 27th of March leaving with a point after a 1-1 draw.

Skipper Andre Ayew was again missing from the squad but unlike in the first leg the GFA clarified that he had picked up a knee injury and had to leave for his club side Nottingham Forest to be further examined.

Taylor is however of the view that the skipper not travelling with the squad was due to his omission in the first leg and not and injury.

“The injured players who have left the team is good for the team but not entirely because we know what they can do for the team but I’m struggling to believe the excuse for Dede that he is injured because he didn’t even play the game I believe there is something there and it’s not that he is injured” the former Hearts of Oak man said speaking to Angel TV.

“Maybe he was angry they did not let him play the first leg and that’s why he was dropped out of the squad the medical team said he is injured but I don’t believe that. He was angry he did not play that’s why he is not going to Angola” he added.
