FALSE ALARM: Hamburger fans celebrate Bundesliga automatic promotion only to miss out on spot

A classic case of don’t count your chickens before they are hatched play out in real time as fans of Hamburger SV celebrated wildly promotion to the Bundesliga  only to have it snatched from them in cruel fashion.

Hamburger beat SV Sandhausen 1-0 away from home thanks to a third minute goal from Jeam-Luc Dompe to pick up what the team believed was the remaining automatic promotion spot to the Bundesliga from the Bundesliga 2.

The win had Hamburger fans invading the pitch to celebrate what they thought was a straight forward promotion to the German top flight.

However, Heidenheim scored a late goal to secure a 3-2 win over Jahn Regensburg to pip Hamburger to the automatic qualification spot. German born Ghanaian Prince Osei Owusu scored both goals for Regensburg.

Jan-Niklas Beste scored a penalty in the 93rd minute and Tim Kleindienst scored the winner in the 99th minute to secure victory for Heidenheim.

Despite the swift turn of events, Hamburger has the chance to qualify to the Bundesliga in a two-legged playoff tie against Schalke 04 on June 1 and June 5.

Ghanaian winger, Ransford-Yeboah Konigsdorffer, is on Hamburger’s team.
