Bayern Munich and Canadian full-back, Alphonso Davies says a member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) contacted him via Instagram to play for Ghana.
According to him, by the time he was contacted through social media, it was too late to switch allegiance.
Davies was born in a refugee camp in Ghana and spent the first five years of his life there before his family resettled in Canada.
The Ghanaian-born Canadian says he opted to play for the country he resettled in after gaining citizenship in 2017 and has since enjoyed a promising career, winning the treble with Bayern Munich in the 2019-2020 season and every league trophy since joining the club.
According to the 22-year-old, he had been playing football for a while but was never considered for Ghana until he got the big move to Bayern Munich in 2018.
According to him, there was an attempt from the GFA to play for the national team at some point but the timing of the approach was too late for him to reconsider his decision.
“Ghana never reached out and also my mum was like, no [to the idea of me playing for Ghana],” he said when quizzed on the option to play for the country of his birth.
“I was playing like not even like the academy they never like said [anything about wanting me] I wasn’t a big name. When the news came out that I was going to Bavaria, then I got a message from the Ghana Federation.
“I think it was someone on the federation he texted me on Instagram because he didn’t have my number or email. But it was too late, at that time I had already got my citizenship and decided to [represent] Canada.”
Alphonso Davies made his Canada debut in 2017 against Curaçao at the age of 16, making him the youngest player to play for the national team.
