U-23 AFCON: Black Meteors to depart for Egypt today

The Black Meteors will leave Ghana for Egypt today, June 12, 2023, to begin pre-tournament camping ahead of the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The camping in Egypt is to help the team acclimatize to the weather conditions in the North African region.

According to the Ghana Football Association, the team will engage in some friendly games to keep the team in good shape ahead of the start of the tournament.

The team started preparations for the tournament on May 23, 2023, at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence at Prampram with 22 local-based players but will travel to the North African country to complete their pre-tournament camping.

However, the squad has been trimmed down to twenty-nine.

The squad features the likes of Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer and Kamaldeen Sulemana, who are expected to join the Meteors team on June 18, 2023, after representing the Black Stars.

Ernest Nuamah, Emmanuel Essiam, and Daniel Afriyie Barnieh are also in the mix and will most likely make the final squad for the competition.

The Black Meteors are in Group A and will play host nations, Morocco, Guinea, and Congo.

Ghana will begin the tournament with a game against Congo on June 25, before taking on Morocco and Guinea on June 27 and June 30, respectively.

The finalists and third-place playoff winner of this tournament will qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympics men’s football tournament in Paris while the 4th-placed team will play in the AFC –CAF playoff to decide the final slot at the Olympics.
