Hosting U16 Championship put us on the map- Greater Accra Basketball Association Chairman

Ghana v Nigeria at 2023 FIBA Africa Zone 3 qualifiers

Greater Accra Regional Basketball Association Chairman Ayitey Bulley says hosting the 2023 FIBA Africa Zone 3 Under 16 Championship has put Ghana on the map.

He said this in an exclusive interview with Citi Sports in the aftermath of Ghana hosting the tournament for the first time.

Despite Ghana missing out on qualification to the main championship in Tunisia in both the boys and girls categories respectively, hosting the competition has had a positive impact on basketball in the country according to Bulley.

“I think it has put us on the map. It’s opened a lot of doors for us in FIBA- basketball’s world governing body-…there is a growing interest in basketball now. We are not going to stop what we are doing, developing basketball in the country.

We are seeing more interest in Ghana…and we believe that with that ripple effects, doors will be opened to Ghanaians to use basketball as an alternate sporting discipline.”

Ghana beat Cote D’Ivoire 47-45 but missed out on progressing to the African Championship.

Nigeria qualified from the zone in the boys and girls categories respectively; the Ghana Basketball Association (GBBA) was heavily involved in the hosting process.
