The 21-year-old finished ahead of his Arsenal teammate Gabriel Martinelli and Manchester City striker Erling Haaland in the voting.

Chelsea’s new £115 million signing Moises Caicedo was also shortlisted alongside his former Brighton teammate Evan Ferguson and Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey.

Saka had been nominated on three occasions previously for the Young Player of the Year award and ended up winning the prize after his impressive season for the Gunners in which he scored 14 goals and provided 11 assists.

Saka becomes the sixth Arsenal player to win the award after Tony Adams, Paul Merson, Nicolas Anelka, Cesc Fabregas and Jack Wilshere.

Saka was presented the award by Wilshere at the Lowry Theatre in Manchester on Tuesday evening.

Saka was also included in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year alongside his Arsenal teammates Martin Odegaard, William Saliba and Aaron Ramsdale.
