Hearts of Oak’s performance last season was confusing- Armstrong Mortagbe

Armstrong-Mortagbe

Former Managing Director of Accra Hearts of Oak, Neil Armstrong Mortagbe, says he was confused at some point last season in relation to the team’s poor performance in the campaign.

He said this in an exclusive interview with Citi Sports ahead of the 2023-2024 BetPawa Ghana Premier League season. Hearts of Oak take on Real Tamale United on September 15 in the opening game of the new season.

The Phobia club finished 12th in the previous season and disappointed after making a promising start to the campaign that had Samuel Boadu and Serbian trainer Slavko Matic sacked.

Assistant David Ocloo was named as interim head coach to see out the season before being replaced by Dutch coach Martin Koopman this offseason.

“I can only say what we saw from a distance and the performance just was not up to a level where we could challenge for honours. There was a time in the season where we were close to the top four (spots) but we seemed to slip away.

I was confused at some point because I saw the players that we had recruited, I saw some of their performances in previous matches and then I saw some of their performances in subsequent matches and it begged a lot of questions as to why.”
