Ghana finishes 18th in final 2023 AFCON standings

Cote D’Ivoire has successfully hosted and won the 2023 AFCON via a 2-1 win over Nigeria in the final game to clinch its third AFCON title.

Nigeria, South Africa and DR Congo finished second, third and fourth respectively in the tournament; South Africa beat Congo on penalties to register its best finish at the competition since 2000.

However, for four time AFCON champions Ghana, the Black Stars ended up ranked near the bottom tier in the competition’s final standings.

The Black Stars finished 18th in the 24 team final standings after crashing out of the competition in the first round without a win.

Ghana lost 1-2 to Cape Verde and drew 2-2 with Egypt and Mozambique respectively to exit the competition at the preliminary stage.

Ghana scored five goals in the tournament and conceded six goals with the Black Stars conceding twice in added on time to Mozambique to miss out on securing a spot in the next round. (Click highlighted text to read full story)
