Sports Journalists slam state of Tamale Stadium pitch ahead of Feb 14 Demo

Front liners of the February 14 demonstration Saddick Adams and Veronica Commey have slammed major Ghanaian football stakeholders ahead of the protest dubbed Save Ghana Football Demonstration on Wednesday.

The sports journalists did so through their reactions to the state of the pitch at the Aliu Mahama Stadium during the MTN FA Cup tie between Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Karela United.

The all Ghana Premier League tie had Asante Kotoko lose 2-0 in Tamale on the surface that was visibly in a poor state.

Reacting to the state of the pitch on his X (formerly Twitter) page, Adams questioned why Ghana’s football authority would sanction a game involving clubs competing in the highest club football division.

“If you really care about the product, how do you sanction a competitive match involving your Premier League clubs on such a surface in 2024?”

For Commey, the veteran sports journalist questioned why financial rewards were given to certain individuals who work closely with Ghana’s national men’s football team.

“Did you know that this is a national stadium in a country that finds it prudent to reward six individuals $600,000 for following the national team for 12 days?”

The pair has voiced its frustration over the poor state of football in Ghana particularly in the wake of Ghana’s first round elimination from the 2023 AFCON in Cote D’Ivoire.
