Cote D’Ivoire has won the 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after winning the 2023 competition via a 2-1 win over Nigeria in the final game.

The West African nation became the first country to host and win the title since 2006 when Egypt hosted and won the title for the fifth time.

Nigeria got the game’s opening goal through defender and captain William Troost-Ekong but Cote D’Ivoire mounted a successful comeback with goals from Franck Kessie and Sebastien Haller to win the game.

The title is Cote D’Ivoire’s third after emerging victorious in the 1992 and 2015 editions; the 1992 and 2015 titles were won at the expense of Ghana.

After being on the brink of certain elimination from the competition at the group stage, Cote D’Ivoire was beyond remarkable and clinching the title sending the packed Alassane Ouattara Stadium into utter delirium.

Several thousands of Ivorians lined up in the streets to greet their heroes. However, the wild celebrations could have taken a tragic turn as a motorcycle rider crashed into a three wheel car.

The men looked to square up against each other after the collision but hugged and continued to celebrate the win.
