13TH AFRICAN GAMES: Some challenges are from federations not Sports Ministry- Mustapha Ussif

Minister of Youth and Sports Mustapha Ussif

Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has blamed some sports federations for their roles in controversies that have rocked the opening phase of the African Games.

The 13th African Games are taking place in Ghana with the Borteyman Sports Complex and University of Ghana Stadium as the main host venues. The competition runs from March 8 to March 23.

Speaking at a presser, the Sports Minister addressed varied issues ranging from kitting to equipment and logistical challenges. He took a swipe at the Ghana Cycling Federation on the issue of ill fit equipment for Ghanaian riders in the cycling competition. (Click highlighted text to read full story)

On the subject of kitting, the Minister said, “We give the kits to them and they say they don’t like it. They are comfortable in their own kit. That is not my problem. Even giving us the sizes (for the kits) it will take time, we keep on asking for sizes and it will delay. We have timelines to order these things to come.”

“Sometimes, the challenges are not coming from the Ministry or the Local Organizing Committee. We don’t deal directly with the athletes, the athletes are managed by the federations.”

Competition in cycling, judo, swimming and beach volleyball continues today.
