Accra 2023: We knew beating Kenya was going to be tough- Charles Abbiw

Ghana in action against Kenya (red) at 13th African Games

Captain of Ghana’s National Men’s Hockey Team, Charles Abbiw, says the team’s win over Kenya was bound to be tough due to familiarity between the two teams.

He said this in an exclusive interview with Citi Sports following Ghana’s 3-1 win over Kenya in the pool stage of the hockey competition at the 13th African Games.

Ghana scored all three goals in the third quarter with Kenya getting a consolation goal in the fourth quarter after a goalless first half.

“We are very happy to win this game. We knew it was going to be tough extremely tough . We played last October in South Africa and it was the same thing (3-1) so we knew were going to beat them but we knew it was going to be tough. First, second quarter, we couldn’t find our rhythm, they were on us but we kept our composure, we stuck to the game plan and we kept our heads up.”

On top contender South Africa’s exit from the competition over a substandard pitch for the competition, Abbiw stated, “They have their own reason for pulling out of the tournament but we are still in the tournament and we keep playing.”

In the Women’s Division, Ghana beat Nigeria 1-0.
