Hosting Commonwealth Games won’t cost as much as African Games- Mustapha Ussif

Honourable Ussif

Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, says hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games won’t cost Ghana as much as it did hosting the 2023 African Games.

Ghana hosted the African Games for the first time in its history with the competition officially running from March 8 to March 2023.

According to the Sports Minister, Ghana is angling towards hosting the multi sport competition for athletes from nations who are under the international political organization.

Minister relayed this information at a time Commonwealth authorities believe the time is right for an African country to host the Games in an interview with GH One TV.

“Their programs, they want an African nation. They said it is time for Africa to host the Commonwealth Games, and Ghana, we have the facilities now. It is not going to cost us as much as it cost us to organize the African Games if we decide as a country to go for Commonwealth Games.”

“The beauty of the Commonwealth Games is that they will give you funding that will even give you funding that will come from the Commonwealth Secretariat, unlike the African Games.”

The next host of the Commonwealth Games has come under serious scrutiny after Malaysia and Australian city Victoria, turned down the chance to host the competition.
